The Gefran M31-6-M-P05M-1-4-D is a mercury-filled melt pressure transducer from the M3 series, purpose-built for melt pressure measurement in high-temperature industrial environments. The M3 series is designed for use in large-scale fixed installations and stationary industrial equipment — typically extruders and laboratory equipment for R&D — in accordance with European Directive 2011/65/EU.
The operating principle is based on hydraulic transmission of the process pressure through a mercury-filled capillary system. The fluid-filled design ensures thermal stability of the pressure signal, allowing the M3 series to handle process media temperatures up to 400°C. The physical pressure is converted to an electrical signal using strain gauge technology in a Wheatstone bridge configuration.
An internally generated 80% calibration signal (R-Cal) is built into the transducer, enabling operators to verify sensor function without removing it from the extruder barrel. This reduces downtime and simplifies preventive maintenance routines.
The standard diaphragm is 15-5 PH stainless steel with Gefran’s GTP+ protective coating, providing chemical resistance against a wide range of polymer melts. For pressure ranges below 100 bar (1,500 psi), a corrugated 17-7 PH diaphragm with GTP+ coating is available. Standard thread options include 1/2-20 UNF and M18×1.5, with additional thread types available on request. The 6-pin connector version carries an IP65 protection rating.
